ARTIST STATEMENT

Sergio Roger (b. 1982, Barcelona) is a contemporary artist based in Barcelona. His work focuses on the reinterpretation of ancient art through the creation of elaborate textile sculptures and installations. Through his practice, he questions preconceived ideas of the past as constructed and reinforced by Western museography, proposing alternative readings that challenge hegemonic narratives, permanence, and historical certainty.
Driven by a pursuit of realism, his practice is informed by research and experimentation with highly refined traditional textile techniques. The materials he primarily works with are antique linen, raw silk, and leather, which he integrates with found objects or traditional sculptural materials, such as steel, concrete or bronze.
The artist's work is driven by an interest in combining technical mastery with conceptual and philosophical inquiry. His practice aims to explore profound existential themes from a contemporary perspective. He is particularly engaged with the interplay of memory, collective identity, and the notion of the sacred throughout art history, as well as the integration of universal myths with personal and autobiographical narratives.
